Fun in the Kitchen

If you know us at all, you probably are well aware that Erik is the primary food preparer of the household. I lack creativity & skill. After starting Charlie on some cereal, I started looking around at baby food & like most baby items, I was shocked at the price! I did some research and found out that it's actually really easy to make (even for those who lack any kitchen talent). Our garden is exploding with produce so I decided to give it a shot.

My first attempt was peas. We shelled out the bigger ones & we made stir fry out of the other ones. (Sidebar - we shelled what seemed like a TON of peas & we had maybe 2 cups, so they are a little time consuming to prepare.) I steamed them, threw them in the blender, added some water & wa-laa! Then I had the official taste tester try them out & he loved them! I had read that some new flavors or textures can take several tries before babies like them so I was shocked that he gobbled them right up.

Next we tried green beans. We still have green beans in the freezer from last year so I will be making a lot of baby food green beans. Charlie loves green beans too! Last night we tried bananas. I think he was a little shocked at the sweeetness but he kept on eating them. I think the key is to use bananas that are ripe but not too ripe. It's been a fun experience. We also have some beets growing in the garden and so I'll probably make some of them to freeze until he's a little bigger. I'm also excited to try some more fruits & get some frozen while it's in season.

MMMMMmmmmm, green beans!
I am seriously so excited about this. It's really strange. So far we have invested about $6.00 in a steamer basket & I have bought some ice cube trays to freeze the food in. Another bonus is we don't have all of these little plastic containers or jars to get rid of! Charlie is getting wholesome & homegrown produce (some anyways). My plan is to freeze as much as I can before I go back to work...even though it's easy, it does take a little bit of time. And of course the worse part is having to clean up!

  1. I think it's fabulous that you are making your own food - it never even crossed my mind with Ava!
