It was indeed a long (& busy weekend)! For not having any plans going into the 4th we sure did stay plenty busy. Thursday morning we went and picked strawberries up by Dassel. I had never been to this place before but it was really nice. There were no weeds at all (compared to where we went last year), there were no bugs, and the berries were big. Erik came with but had a conference call so he ended up sitting in the car most of the time. I told the people around us that I hoped they weren't planning on a relaxing & serene morning in the berry patch with Charlie & Levi around. Levi ate his weight in berries & Charlie was semi-helpful in picking. We ended up with 28# in an hour or so.
On the 4th, we first had to deal with our strawberries. The boys and I made 2 different types of strawberry muffins & then I made a batch of jam. After that we headed up to Brenda & Alex's and went to a parade followed by some socializing in the park. It reminded me a lot of the Cherry Grove parade, except most of the floats turned around and came back through again because that's how they needed to get out of town so it was 2 parades in 1! Later we went out the lake & Alex took us on a boat ride. We tried fishing but it was pretty tough to manage (and a little windy). We stopped & fished off the dock for awhile & Charlie caught a ton of little fish. As expected, he was absolutely terrified of it. haha
The boys were so tired from the day that we had our first ever successful transfer from the car to their beds. Neither of them moved.
Saturday morning Erik said the infamous "I've been thinking..." in regards to building some sort of patio by the back door. During nap he ran to town to get supplies & talked Tracy into helping him. With in a few hours they had this! If it helps prevent even 1/3 of the dirt from being brought in the house I will satisfied. Charlie had fun helping & supervising too.
Sunday was much more relaxing but we still stayed a busy around here. The weather was much hotter that day so I was happy to stay inside.
One downer from the weekend was the passing of the runt chicken we held back. He was not looking good & I tried telling Charlie I thought he would probably die soon because he looked sick. He was pretty adamant about him not dying so I was worried as to how this would go down. A couple of hours later, Nancy texted me and said he was dead. So after the boys got up from nap we went over to check her pool & then I told them they'd better check on the chicken. Charlie walked over there and said, "Huh, looks like my chicken died. Can we ask Nancy if we can go in her pool now?" and walked away. So he really didn't seem to be bothered by it at all. He's just happy he can still feed/water/collect eggs from her chickens.
